Surinderpal (“Surinder”) Rathor is running to be the next mayor of Williams Lake. As a proud citizen who has called Williams Lake home for the last 48 years, Surinder through his wealth of experience and know-how as a decorated community leader is bringing a new approach to city hall, one that is focused on building a prosperous Williams Lake.

As a city councillor, Surinder consistently advocated for citizens on a variety of issues, resulting in him being re-elected for 6 consecutive terms, totalling 21 years in office. During his time as city councillor, Surinder’s activities had a lasting impact on the community. He was able to procure Walmart to Williams Lake, secure over $10 million in funding from multiple levels of government to repair Mackenzie Avenue in addition to overseeing the creation of the River Valley trail network and sitting on the 2002 BC Winter Games board.

Surinder’s vast impact on Williams Lake did not stop with him being city councillor. Surinder is an active community volunteer and has experience serving on a broad range of boards within the Cariboo such as with Cariboo Memorial Hospital;

the Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin;
Williams Lake Stampede Association;
Williams Lake and District Credit Union; and
the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple.
Furthermore, Surinder has been actively involved with the Williams Lake Community Policing, Victim Services, the Employee Family Assistance Program, the Drug and Alcohol Prevention Committee, Tourism Discovery Centreand Seniors Activity Centre. 

During this time, Surinder has received broad accolades of the highest degree including the:  

2018 Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers;
2012 Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award;
2005 BC Community Achievement Award;
2002 Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award; and
the 1992 Canada’s 125th Anniversary Award;

in addition to being nominated as the Citizen of the Year and Newsmaker of the Year. Surinder will bring this expansive knowledge, first-hand experience and leadership to build a community that provides opportunities for everyone. 

Surinder has built a life in Williams Lake with his wife Sharon and is gratified to have had his parents and in-laws residing within the community with him. Surinder had the pleasure of also raising his son Robin and late daughter Roop in Williams Lake.

Surinder is using his vast experience and proven leadership to bring the citizens of Williams Lake together to help deliver the best results for the community. Surinder’s proven track record of getting things done collaboratively, efficiently and effectively brings a much-needed change to city hall. Having deep roots in the community, Surinder is dedicated to building a Williams Lake that provides an opportunity for all citizens to prosper.
